Godless Traditions

  • 5 August 2012

If you look at history (or use the search option at Wikipedia), you will find quite some articles on religion. If you feel a little bit adventurous, you could look up the history of atheism. Astonishingly the concept is older than Islam by over 1,000 years. In case you prefer moving picture, I’ll recommend BBCs’ A Rough History of Disbelief series. The first episode features an interesting quote attributed to Epicurus.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?

Sad to see that modern preachers use a lot less intelligent words to drive people to insanity and to abuse them for their own goals – but that’s progress in civilisation. Or so they say.
